Subject: good old days
my name is fred dortmann in 1938 or 1939 the court sent me to the home,I can remember the case worker,ms carlson driving me there from chicago court.I was a little skinney kid and very shy.I remember the first day there when they gavve me some clothes,which included knickers.my first school was emerson in maywood.ms lichtner was head lady,and she got to whip my butt many times before I ever got out of there,ms o neil was the cook and and ms caird was the receiptionist.the name of the matron on the boys floor escapes me but ms venema came along shortly after I did.oh,how I miss those days,I thought it was terrible while I was there,but as I look back it was a good experience.I would love to hear from anyone that was there durong the late 30s and early 40s my email address is fdortmann@yahoo.com I am so excited finding this site that I could write of my experiences there all nite,

Subject: Maywood, Childrens Receiving Home
I was ther from late 1957 to 1959. I also went to Emerson Grade School. My floor parents were the McDonalds. This was a tough time for all of us in this institution. Not for the institution's sake but for our family situations. The structure still stands to this day, it's located in Maywwod on 9th and Madison.

Subject: Bittersweet Memories
I am 72 years of age. I was 12 years old in 1951 when I was admitted to the Children's Recieving Home along with my 8 year old sister and 5 year old brother. I have been trying for some time to find something, anything on the home. I knew that it was torn down some years back. For some reason I mentioned this to my husband this evening and he suggested that I try again tonight. I could not believe it when I foud this site.
I loved reading how the home got started. Miss Mina Lichtner was still there at that time.
